Gunars is an FTE Senior Advisor whose career spans over 42 years as an engineering and manufacturing expert. He is an innovative and change-oriented leader with a proven ability to organize and motivate others. Gunars is adept at managing complex projects requiring the involvement of multiple functions. He has an exceptional technical aptitude with the ability to understand and guide the resolution of complex manufacturing and engineering challenges. 

Notable experience and accomplishments:

  • Spearheaded the creation of the GM Stamping Global Bill of Operations, a foundational document now implemented across all GM stamping facilities worldwide, optimizing plant operations
  • Orchestrated the consolidation of stamping production operations, overseeing the closure of five major factories to streamline efficiency and resource allocation
  • Pioneered strategic planning initiatives, crafting compelling business cases totaling over $1B in investments for the enhancement of stamping plants’ capabilities
  • Adeptly navigated labor union dynamics, successfully negotiating sourcing matters with United Auto Workers representatives to ensure operational continuity
  • Directed daily quality  control operations at a sprawling 1.8M square foot stamping plant, involving a complex array of machinery and assembly lines, leading a diverse team of over 100 employees
  • Championed lean manufacturing principles, imparting invaluable knowledge and fostering a culture of continuous improvement among teams across multiple assembly plants

Prior to consulting, Gunars spent over four decades at General Motors, starting as an Industrial Quality Engineer in a stamping plant before transitioning to roles in staff positions at GM Stamping Headquarters. He facilitated capacity and efficiency improvements while maintaining positive relations with UAW representatives. Gunars briefly taught Lean Manufacturing at General Motors Lansing Liaison Office and led a team in developing operating standards for stamping plants, creating an optimal factory layout used for improvements and new constructions.

Gunars earned a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan – Flint. He held a certification as a Quality Assurance Engineer from the American Society of Quality Control and is an active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
